Governors’ Forum C’ttee tasks Sokoto on internal revenue
The Sokoto State Government has been charged to improve its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
The Director General of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum Mr. Asishana Okauru made the call recently after an assessment of projects executed by the administration of Alhaji Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko. Consultants of the forum also called on the government to work towards improving the revenue base of the state. The committee explained that having looked at the state’s 2009 budget, their conclusion was that the Internally Generated Revenue needed to be increased six times and that to fund the budget, the state needs to increase the IGR five times.
For capital and recurrent expenditure according to them, the IGR should be increased four or five times, noting that the IGR is not sufficient to pay personnel costs.
The state government was also advised to avoid delay in the issuance of certificates of occupancy and develop the Illela international market. These, they pointed out, would assist in increasing the revenue base of the state.
The peer Review Committee urged the state to involve the private sector in the building of their market and the grazing reserve, adding that the state should be transformed from grassroots farming to commercial farming.
