UN Group Lobbies 36 Governors over Peace, Conflict Resolution
A National peace advocacy group (UN-POLAC), has intensified efforts towards the inclusion of the 36 states’ governors in a peace and conflict resolution plan that will promote peace interaction and quick resolution of conflict in different parts of the country.
According to the group, though the peace advocacy efforts by the group have led to the inclusion of the Traditional Rulers in most parts of the Country including the Niger Delta region, the proposed advocacy plan with the 36 state governors will include the periodic use of peace walk and interactive session among groups and tribes to resolve contentious issues.
Speaking at the 2nd National Executive Council meeting of the group, its National Vice President, Chief James Jephathah, said though the proposal is awaiting deliberation and approval by the executive members of the group, the issue of peace being advocated by the group will ensure lasting peace in Nigeria.
Chief James Jephathah, who is also the Chairman of the Bayelsa Peace and Conflict Resolution Committee, said the achievements of the UN-POLAC group have also reflected in the handling of the Niger Delta Amnesty plan and peace in some other parts of the country, “Peace is golden and our group has been encouraging other agencies and groups including states to assist on the issue of promoting peace for development.”
He said the group known as the United Nations Positive Livelihood Award Centre (UN-POLAC) had done very well in Nigeria and have identified the state governors and the traditional rulers as a very important part of the process of ensuring vibrant peace in the country.
