SULLIVAN IHEANACHO CHIME - GOVERNOR OF ENUGU STATE
Governor Sullivan Iheanacho Chime of Enugu State was born on April 10, 1959 at Udi, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State. After his primary education, he attended the College of Immaculate Conception (CIC) in Enugu for his secondary education in 1971 until 1978. In 1980, he gained admission into the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus to read Law and graduated with an LLB Hons in 1980. Immediately, on graduation, he enrolled at the Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos, for his Bar studies and graduated with a Second Class Upper on July 10, 1981.
Thereafter for 17 years, he ran his private legal practice in Enugu and during that period, precisely between June 1992 and July 1994, he was Secretary of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Enugu branch. Later, he was appointed Special Adviser (Legal Matters) to the then Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani. In 2001, he became Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice of Enugu State.
In the run-up to the 2007 election, he joined the gubernatorial race to succeed his erstwhile boss, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and won. He was sworn in on the 29th of May, 2007. Since his accession to power, he has vigorously tackled some of the state’s pressing problems. For example, to stem the crime wave in the state, he donated 50 patrol jeeps to the State Police Command. Unlike under previous dispensations, he has regularized salary payment with the 25th of every month being the latest pay day. Minimum wage has also been increased from N6, 500 to N7, 500, while to boost agricultural production, his administration has procured 42 tractors. Several thousands of housing units are also being constructed across the state to combat acute housing shortage, while dilapidated roads are being reconstructed.
