THEODORE AHEMEFULE ORJI – GOVERNOR ABIA STATE
Governor Theodore Ahemefule Orji was born in Amakaokwe Ugba, Umuahia in 1950 and had his primary and secondary in different parts of the old Imo State. In 1991, he attended the prestigious University of Ibadan from which he graduated in 1977 with Bachelor of Arts degree.
He joined the old Imo State civil service in 1978 as an Administrative officer after his National Service and served in various capacities in different ministries and parastatals until 1991 when Abia State was created.
On March 1st, 1996, T.A Orji was seconded to the then National Electoral Commission (NECON) now INEC, in Abia State as Administrative secretary and later redeployed to Enugu State in 1997, where he supervised the elections that ushered in the government in the State in 1999. Thereafter, he returned to Abia State as the Principal Secretary, Government House, Umuahia and chief of staff to the governor.
He contested for the post of gubernatorial election and won on the platform of Progressive Peoples Alliance. He was sworn in on May 29, 2007.Later he decamped to the Peoples Democratic Party.
He has a deep understanding of the problems of his constituents and had embarked on laudable development efforts based on that knowledge. These include the beautification of the two major cities of Umuahia and Aba, conclusion of plans to relocate the Umuahia main market to its present location for convenience.
The reinvigoration of free medical scheme, free bus services for primary and secondary school students, prompt and monthly payment pension and gratuities, prompt promotion of all eligible workers in the State and the erection of new modern secretariat which on completion will house the ministries under one roof.
He contested the April 2011 gubernatorial elections on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and won.
