MURTALA HAMMANYERO NYAKO –GOVERNOR OF ADAMAWA STATE
Governor Murtala Hammanyero Nyako (rtd) of Adamawa was born on 27th of August, 1943 at Mayo Belwa in his state. At an early age, he was enlisted in the Nigerian Navy for a Military career, which saw him attending Britania Royal Naval College and commissioned as sub-lieutenant in September, 1965 and Royal College of Defence Studies in January 1983, both in England respectively. He later took other military courses in India and the United States of America.
During his military career which spanned about three decades, he served under different commands and headed many Units which included promotion to Chief Naval Operations Officer, Flag Officer Commanding Naval Training Command. He reached the peak of his career as Chief of Naval Staff in 1990, and Chief of Defence Staff in 1992. He retired in 1993.
He doubled his military career also with political appointments during the military intervention years. He was the first Military Governor of Niger State in 1996, and member, Armed Forces Ruling Council from September 1985 until his retirement in September 1993 when he went into full-time farming.
On the return to democracy in 1999, Governor Murtala Nyako became a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on whose platform he contested and won the governorship election in April, 2007, and still serving his first term in office.
His accession to power has witnessed massive transformation of Adamawa State in the areas of health, agriculture, infrastructure, water supply and education.
Over the years, Governor Murtala Nyako has garnered several awards for his services to the Country, one of which was an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Agriculture, from the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) 1993, Grand Commander of the Order of Niger (GCON) 1999 and 2002.
