MU’AZU BABANGIDA ALIYU – GOVERNOR OF NIGER STATE
Alhaji Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Governor of Niger State, was born in Minna, Chanchanga Local Government Area of Niger State on November 12, 1955. He had his elementary education at Central Primary School, Kuta (now IBB Primary School), Minna and Sultan Primary School, Sokoto, all between 1963 and 1969 before proceeding to the College of Arts and Arabic Studies, Sokoto, where he obtained the Teachers’ Grade Two Certificate in 1974. Three years later, he obtained the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) from the College of Education in Sokoto. In 1977 he went for the mandatory National Youth Service at Jubril Martins Memorial Grammar School, Iponri-Lagos and returned home in 1978 to teach at Government Teachers’ College, Minna.
He also went to Bayero University, Kano where he took the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education with specialization in English Language in 1983. He thereafter proceeded to the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States of America in 1985 for his post-graduate studies in Public and International Affairs and graduated with PHD in 1989.
After stints in politics and academics, he joined the Federal Public Service as Acting Chief Political Affairs Officer in May 1990. Nine years later, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu reached the zenith of the public service career by his appointment as Federal Permanent Secretary. He served as permanent secretary in various ministries and gained lots of experience in the process. In the course of his civil service career, he attended various courses in some of the most prestigious schools in the world.
In 2007, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu went into politics and won the governorship of Niger State under the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and assumed office in May 2007. Since his assumption of office, he has encapsulated a vision and mission for Niger State and begun a process of political and economic re-engineering to transform his state into one of the three top and most developed states in Nigeria by the year 2020.
As a mark of recognition of his qualities and attributes which leave no one in doubt of his leadership and managerial potentials, the position of the Chairman, Northern Governors’ Forum was unanimously conceded to him by the other 18 brother Governors for a tenure of two years. Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu was re-elected to another four-year term under the PDP.
