ALIYU MAGATARKADA WAMAKKO– GOVERNOR OF SOKOTO STATE
Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko of Sokoto State was born on 1st March 1953 in Wamakko, Sokoto State. He started his primary education at Magajin Gari ward primary school in 1960 and completed at Wamakko primary school in 1967. He was at Sokoto Teachers’ College from 1968 – 1972 and on completion, took appointment as a teacher and headmaster in various schools from 1973 – 1977. He later gained admission into University of Pittsburg, United States of America, graduating with a B.Sc in 1980, and he stayed back to do his post-graduate course.
On his return to Nigeria, he served at Sokoto Teachers’ College for his National Youth Service, thereafter taking up a job as Principal Assistant Secretary, and later as Secretary of Zurmi Local Government. He also worked at Kaura Namoda Local Government in various capacities before becoming Chairman of Sokoto Local Government from 1986 – 1987. While still working, he took time to attend several courses both at home and abroad.
In his meteoric rise in the public service, he became General Manager, Hotel Management and Tourism Board, Sokoto, and was later promoted to Director-General in the Governor’s Office in March 1992. He held the same position in various Ministries and Commissions before his election in 1999 as Deputy Governor to Governor Attahiru Bafarawa of Sokoto State, and was re-elected for a second term in April 2003 but he voluntarily resigned on 15th March, 2006.
In 2007, he ran for governorship election on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), taking his oath of office on 29th May, 2007. Sokoto State has since then witnessed huge developmental strides because he has brought his wealth of experience garnered in scores of appointment in the public service.
In all, Governor Wamakko has garnered over 100 awards and honours from different organisations for his tireless contributions to the development of Sokoto State and Nigeria at large.
