Asishana Bayo Okauru, the Director General of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, was born on January 7, 1962. He attended several primary schools, a consequence of the itinerant nature of his father’s job as a civil servant including All Saints Primary School, Auchi, Agbado Primary School, Benin-City and Ugbogbo Primary School, Igarra, all in Edo state.
For his secondary education, Mr. Okauru attended the Holy Trinity Grammar School, Sabongida-Ora, Edo State and eventually gained admission to study Economics (B.Sc.) at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile-Ife, Oyo State, Nigeria from 1980 to 1984. He was one of the top students of his class in his first year, earning him the University of Ife scholarship award for Academic Excellence, which he maintained throughout his stay in the university.
Mr. Okauru spent his compulsory National Youth Service Corps Scheme (NYSC) year as a Tutorial Lecturer in Applied Economics at the Ogun State (now Olabisi Onabanjo) University, Ago Iwoye.
After youth service, Mr. Okauru studied Law at the University of Ibadan and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1989. He also has a joint Masters degree in Business Administration and Information Science (the first of such in the University) from the North Carolina Central University (NCCU), USA.
Mr. Okauru worked at Arthur Andersen & Co., Nigeria as Management trainee and later at IBM at the Research Triangle Park, NC, USA first as an Operations Analyst and later as an e-Business Analyst. He joined the Nigeria Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2003 as a Foundation Staff, from where he was appointed as the pioneer Director of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), a position he held till November 2009 when he resigned from the services of the EFCC.
Mr. Okauru loves comedy, plays tennis and has a voracious appetite for news. He is happily married to Ifueko Okauru (nee Omoigui) and has three lovely children: Shana, Michael and Samuel.
